Beacon Street Brownstone

deep blue console and art

Deep blue sculptural console - Photography Read McKendree

A three‑piece collection—entry console, living‑space storage unit, and side table—designed for a beautiful multi‑story brownstone on Beacon Street in Boston. A statement art piece in the entry balances sculptural presence with anchoring deep blues and grey, while additional pieces compliment the quiet luxury of the main living space.

The Brief - A Statement Piece

A historic Beacon Street foyer needed a sculptural console that converses with large‑format art and the home’s subtle nautical cues, adding to the quiet luxury that carries throughout the home.

Ideation

We drew inspiration from a spontaneous moment in the workshop—components stacked on a bench in a way that created a layered, organic silhouette - evoking the surface of the ocean. This became the foundation for a split, stacked form that felt both sculptural and fluid.

Design Development

We explored how the console could visually interact with the adjacent artwork. A back cutout allowed the painting’s frame to sit behind the piece, creating a deliberate overlap that tied the two elements together.

Taking cues from overlapping waves, the organic form is pushed to wrap the leaning painting while the balance remains flush to the wall.

Materials and Finishes

Color refinement

Thick solid basswood from Northern Wisconsin was selected for it’s stability and pale even grain, ready to accept a deep blue-black dye.

Final Solution

Constructed and finished completely in-house with an added hidden element - a seamless touch-latch drawer disguised in the pattern of vertical breaks, for a further finely tailored end product.

The Next Brief - Living Space Storage

The third‑floor living space needed a storage piece that delivered function without overpowering the room’s refined, quiet aesthetic. In addition, the client wanted a fresh interpretation of a barrel‑shaped side table—something understated, sophisticated and materially expressive.

Open storage for display with a large enclosed base storage anchoring the piece.

Final Brief - A small table with refined details and sophisticated materiality

We wanted to push the typical barrel-table to a heightened level. We explored how three legs could define the form, experimenting with profiles and how each leg met the top surface with a small step out to differentiate the figure. A radial veneer pattern was developed for the top, waterfalling down each leg. A subtle vertical crease in the leg profile added refinement and shadow play with the changing natural light in this location.

Finished in a divided radial pattern, the Anigre figured veneer has a pattern that carries through the legs that gives a highly detailed and tailored sensibility - one that is only experienced when seated and in direct contact with the piece.
