Sprouts & Playforms: Open-Ended Play Systems

Grounded in child development research: designing modular softgoods with internal shape-memory cores and scaling them into award-winning commercial play structures like the Framehouse, Play Kitchen, and Accoya wood Garden Cart.

01 / The Challenge

Rooted in child development research, open-ended play structures provide children with flexible tools to shape their own environments, spaces, and imaginative narratives rather than following prescribed, single-use rules.

The primary challenge was developing tactile, pliable modular objects ("Sprouts") capable of bending, folding, stacking, and attaching to other structures without losing shape memory or compromising safety. The second phase ("Playforms") required expanding these material principles into commercial indoor and outdoor architectural play furniture designed for production and long-term durability.

02 / Material R&D & Product Execution

Felt & Shape-Memory Core

Engineered a softgoods composite pairing durable technical felt with an internal aluminum shape-memory armature—allowing shapes to be bent, folded, stacked, or worn during free play.

Accoya Wood Outdoor Garden Cart

Researched advanced wood treatment methods and selected acetylated Accoya timber for the Garden Cart, giving the outdoor exploration piece superior non-toxic rot resistance and stability.

Commercial Playforms Suite

Scaled prototypes into a commercial product family featuring the indoor open A-frame Framehouse, a highly reconfigurable Play Kitchen, and mobile exploration carts.

03 / Impact & Recognition

  • Best New Design Winner: Honored with the Best New Design award at Dwell on Design for excellence in contemporary child-focused industrial design.
  • Commercial Market Rollout: Successfully transitioned developmental research and softgoods prototyping into viable, manufactured products brought directly to market.
  • Child-Tested & Validated: Proven through extensive hands-on play testing to support spatial awareness, creative flexibility, and non-prescriptive learning.
